Top 10 Video Game Twists Of All Time!

March 1 , 2007 ... posted by Mike

rock

In the world of video games it is rare that we get a story that we truly feel attached to. It is even more rare for said video games to pull a fast one and leave you with your jaw on the floor. It does happen ... but these moments are few and far between for us gamers. I decided to make this list because 2007 was a great year for the Plot Twist ... so without further dudes ... here are the Headshot Radio Top 10 video game plot twists of all time!

SUPER SPOILARS AHEAD!

10. Call of Duty 4 - Sargent Jackson is bad ass enough to survive a NUKE! Oh wait ...

rock

This one speaks for itself as a huge plot twist. You’re chugging along in a game as Sargent Jackson ... you’re going after the terrorist in a middle eastern capital city ... and crap ... a nuclear bomb is set to go off. He manages to get on the outskirts of the blast in a helicopter ... but the aircraft crashes. Jackson gets out of the helicopter ... by some miracle alive ... only to die from the wounds he suffered minutes later!

After that you play as this totally different guy in a different part of the world. Nice twist guys.

9. Bioshock - Would you Kindly Get me the nine iron?

rock

You crash your plane in the middle of the ocean ... by chance right where there is a giant tower sticking up ... weird right? You go in and progress through the city of Rapture ... where you’re blindly following this guy Atlas’s lead but not really realizing why you’re doing it. And he leads you right to the founder of Rapture and tells you to kill him . You do it.

Why?

Because you’re a bio-engineered human who’s being controlled by Atlas by using 3 simple words ... Would you Kindly.

8. Halo - What in the "Flood" is going on?

rock

The world of Halo is epic enough the first time though. You’re blasting your way through legions of Covenant while trying to discover the secret of the mysterious ring you are on. Right when you get the hang of the game ... Halo drops a bomb on you called the Flood.

The Flood is an ancient race feared by all other races and they will attack, attack, attack, and keep coming until you’re dead or out of ammo.

7. Metal Gear Solid 2 - Why is the Colonel’s face melting?

rock

Metal Gear Solid is known for its plot twists ... having to put controllers into 2nd ports, Liquid being a clone, playing as Raiden, and Boss not dying are all huge twists. However ... as you’re running through the storage areas naked as Raiden ... the biggest twist of all happens. You find out you’ve been taking orders from a malfunctioning Artificial Intelligence the entire time. Talk about being in a bad way.

6. The Darkness - Jenny No!!! Jenny No!!! NOOO!!!!!

rock

Being a bigger fan of the Darkness than pretty much everyone ... this one hit me hard. Maybe it’s because he sat on the couch with her and watched to Kill a Mockingbird for 10 minutes ... maybe it was because they were both orphans ... maybe because of that hot lip ring.

I don’t know for sure why ... but when the Darkness makes you helplessly stand there while watching your Uncle Paulie shoot your girlfriend in the back of the head ... I got more mad at a game than I ever have in my life.

It wasn’t right Damnit! After that you surrender to the Darkness in order to go on an all out revenge RAMPAGE to kill Paulie for what he did. And it feels GOOD.

5. Chrono Trigger - This Game is Named After This Chrono Guy right?

rock

The entire first part of the game is based on the fact that Chrono is the main character and he and his friends need to stop the evil wizard Magus from summoning Lavos, a giant terrible creature. But along the way you meet a prophet that warns Chrono about facing Lavos.

When you finally fight the beast ... the prophet reviles himself to be Magus (who was trying to kill Lavos to rid the world of it) ... and Chrono is vaporized trying to destroy Lavos.

Title character dead halfway in. This would be higher on the list but luckily this game is all about time travel.

Oh yeah ... does anyone else see the simularities between this twist and the one in Dragonball Z when Goku dies 4 episodes in? Those writers must enjoy each other's work ...

4. Mass Effect - Saren’s Not Evil ... He’s Hedging His Bets.

rock

Saren knows something we don’t about the Geth and Reapers. He thinks he’s saving the world from annihilation by trying to enslave all the galaxy’s races. As it turns out he’s actually under the mind control of a ship named Sovereign ... a ship that is actually a member of the Ancient Machine race known as the Reapers.

Oh yeah ... and The Reapers are basically the galaxy’s gods ... as they have made, destroyed, and remade the galaxy several times over. (Think "the Matrix") And now you have to figure out a way to stop them.

3. Resident Evil Code: Veronica X - Who Wears Their Sunglasses at Night?

rock

This is one of the biggest plot twists ever in my opinion because it changed the entire complexity of the Resident Evil Canon. All of a sudden Mr. “I should have died in Resident Evil 1" Albert Wesker shows up at the Ashford Mansion to confront Claire ... and he’s apparently developed super-human abilities.

Not only was this appearance Bad ass as hell ...it signifies that there is another company other than Umbrella involved in this plot and they are much stronger than previously thought. It also shows that he’s been involved in the background going-ons since Resident Evil 2.

2. Final Fantasy VII - The Cloud / Sephiroth / Aeris Triangle

rock

This is probably #1 to a lot of people ... and I can see why. It is kind of like a combination of Jenny and Chrono’s Deaths. Aeris was the 2nd main character and the love interest of Cloud ... or is that Zack ... no it’s Cloud. Heh.

When Aeris goes off to fight Sephiroth alone ... AVALANCHE is forced to go after her. When they find her ... Sephiroth is trying to get Cloud to kill her but he resists. And just when you think everything is going to be all right ... Nope ... GIANT SWORD through the chest.

1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - That’s Soooo Revan

1My all time plot twist happens in the Bioware epic Knights of the Old Republic. Never have I been floored with a story revelation like I was when the money shot hit in this game. You start the game having lost your memory and as you progress you find that you have jedi powers. You train, become a jedi, and begin to try to rid the world of the evil Sith Lord Darth Malak. Malak has recently betrayed and killed his master ... Darth Revan ... the most notorious Sith Lord ever.

You go through the story as good or evil depending on your preference ... piecing together the puzzle of what Malak is up to ... why your jedi party members act they way they do ... and why you’re so good at being evil at times.

Near the end of the game ... your jedi partner Bastila is seduced by the Dark Side and becomes Darth Malak’s apprentice. As shocking as that was considering she was always a voice of reason ... that’s nothing compared to the bomb she drops on you when you face her.

Knowing she is no match for you ... she mentions that Darth Revan did not die when Malak ordered his ship to be destroyed. Instead ... he was badly injured, recovered by the jedi, and his mind had been erased. That’s when you realize ... YOU ARE DARTH REVAN.

At this point you have to make a decision about whether you are Good or Evil. You can either save Bastila from the Dark side with your amazing tale ... or you can be who you were meant to be and kill her in cold blood.

One of the most intense and satisfying plot twists ever ... and that includes movies.

I only ever played 2 of these games…Halo and KOTOR. The KOTOR twist was the best…I actually am playing it again on my PC. I took a break from it about a month ago when I landed on Manaan. I want to get back into it, but I have way too much going on right now. Enemy Territory and Team Fortress 2 is time consuming. Someday.
