Super Smash Brother Brawl ( 9.5 out of 10 ) ...

May 8, 2008 ... Review by Mike

1Well ... it has been awhile since I say down to write a review ... so I guess this one is WAY overdue. What was that game that came out in Early March for the Wii? It was a pretty big one ... Oh yeah ... Super Smash Brothers Brawl! Honestly I have no idea how neither Chad nor I wrote a review for this game since we review just about everything ... but here it is (better late than never. I’ll keep it short and sweet)

If you are an avid listener to the podcast ... than you know that we covered Super Smash Brothers Brawl at length ... and that it even helped make the series #8 on our best games of all time list. There is a reason for both ... this game is fantastic.

At it’s core ... it is a bit of a schizophrenic fighting game ... that features beloved Nintendo characters that we all grew up playing. Whether it is Mario vs Bowser vs Kirby vs Pit or any other combination of 25+ characters ... this game features some of the most insane combat of any game I’ve ever played. Compared to most fighters ... this game features simple controls ... but used in the correct way with a combination of crazy weapons and items ... there is a ton here for the hardcore gamer to enjoy. The brawl mode in this game is utterly perfect, especially in person. However, the game works quite well online, as long as you don’t care about facing random people or friends that live in Japan.

The adventure mode is lacking a bit and goes on for WAY too long. It is cool to progress though locals of your favorite Nintendo games and see how all of the characters interact with one another ... (although it would be nice if there were some FREAKING VOICE2 ACTING). My major gripe with the story mode is that it is 10+ hours of mediocre game-play and very unimaginative enemy design. That being said ... it is worthwhile to play thought it at least once.

The graphics are some of the best that the Wii has to offer (remember I said Wii) ... but I can’t knock the game for the hardware limitations. The characters all look great and it is freaking sweet to see long gone characters like Pit re-envisioned here in this game. The soundtrack may be the best collection of music of any game ever. We obtained the soundtrack here at Headshot Radio and it consists of 200+ songs that dip you in nostalgia along with rocking your face off.

There is a lot to play around with in this game and it is one of the best options to bust out if you are having a nerd party. As far as traditional game playing goes ... it doesn’t get much better than a good 4-player Super Smash Brothers session for pure fun (Rock Band wins the honor in non-traditional game-play). While this game was clearly made to be played with friends ... a single player can get a great experience as well. Collecting unlockables alone is worth the price of this game. All this combined earns this game a great score of 9.5 out of 10.
