Rock Band Review (10 out of 10) ...

December 7, 2008 ... Review by Mike

1Rock Band is one of the games I’ve been most hyped for in a long time … and that is usually the recipe for heartbreak. This time … I can see this being a long fulfilling relationship.

Rock Band was made by the team that bought you the first two Guitar Hero games … so this game comes from a great pedigree. The first thing you need to know is that the guitar part of this game is basically Guitar Hero with a slightly different interface. The singing part of the game is the same as Karaoke Revolution … another game that Harmonix made in the past. The new part is the drums … where you hit the drums based on the color that comes next on screen … same as the Guitar basically. Put them all together … and you have one hell of a rhythm game dejour.

The song choices in this game are varied enough to suit just about everyone … with all types of Rock being represented. If you like rhythm games … this should be right up your ally … if you don’t … then it wouldn’t matter what score I give this game … right? For those who have never tried a rhythm game before … this may be your best bet in terms of ease of play. Easy mode on guitar, bass, and vocals is simple to use … where as the drums may require a bit more practice. All in all … if you can afford it … try this game out.

Gameplay: Solid … the drums are sensitive and the guitar takes some getting used to … but solid.

Single Player Experience: There is a lot to play around with … going through the game with each of the 3 instruments is a different experience5 from one another and could merit a game all on their own.

Multi-Player Experience: Bar none the best party game you will play this year. The game also works well online … but will probably only be fun if you know the people you are playing with.

Graphics: Great for what they are … the presentation is really crisp and fun.

Sound: Stellar … all facets of the game are tuned perfectly and the game rocks cranked up.

Value: This one is a toughy … because it is a $170 game. Personally I love just playing guitar and singing as I listen to the music … and the drums provide a fun game as well. When you put it all together with your friends … there really is nothing like it. I’d say there is good value there if you plan on throwing lots of parties for nerds and or have a ton of interest in the drums and vocals as well as guitar. Once the single guitar packs come out … then this is a slam dunk.
