Mass Effect Review (10 out of 10) ...
December 15 , 2007 ... Review by Derek
My personal Game of the Year (narrowly edging out the exquisite Bioshock), Mass Effect is, regardless of medium, a science fiction epic on the same playing field as the original Star Wars trilogy. Bold no? But it is true. From the memorable characters to the always different and epic combat, and even the nerdy optional exploration, this game delivers. The last 3 hours or so of game play is the best I have experienced in years, both in terms of story and action.
One of the great things about Mass Effect is that it is an adult, intelligent game. Continuing in this year’s trend of excellent in-game writing (See; portal, The Darkness, Bioshock), the world created in Mass Effect is as well developed as anything seen in the movies this year.
By placing humanity as a newcomer in the intergalactic community; the tensions, struggles, fallacies, and hopes of the entire race are placed squarely on your Commander Shepard, and how you deal with it is completely left up to you, with real story consequences. So much do your decisions effect game play that I am interested to see how Bioware incorporates it all into a sensible narrative in the 2 planned sequels….I simply can’t wait to find out if they do.
Mike’s Mass Effect Review 10 out of 10
Everything Derek said is true … this game is amazing. I’m not completely sure if this is game of the year or not … but it certainly will give Halo 3, Rock Band, and Bioshock a run for its money in my book. The story is epic … and I haven’t felt this into a character (Shepard) since I played KOTOR. At times I truly felt I was Commander Shepard. The game play is solid western RPG type stuff and once you get leveled up … your character becomes a beast. The game is gorgeous … even with some frame-rate and texture popping issues … and it is a game experience that should not be missed. 10 baby!
