Everyday Shooter (PS3 / PC) 8.0 out of 10 ...

May 16, 2008 ... Review by Chad

1Everyday Shooter is a game that came out late in 2007, and offered a breath of fresh air to all the PS3 owners who were starving for good games to play. As far as downloadable games were concerned at the time, the only ones that were worth downloading were Super Stardust HD, and maybe Calling All Cars if you were really desperate. Then came along Everyday Shooter (Just this month, the game also released on Steam, allowing PC owners to get in on the fun).

All pun intended, this game gives you a reason to turn on your PS3 everyday. At first it didn’t seem like there was a lot going on in the game, but the more and more you played, the more you began to figure out how each level works, how the enemies would act/react, and how to lose a couple of hours on a Saturday morning.

The game excels in one thing above all, being fun. At its core as a dual-stick shooter, the game is almost as simple as shoot whatever moves. However, creator Jonathan Mak has even said that you will probably want to ditch the dual-stick setup so you can use the buttons on the face of the control pad to shoot. At first I thought this was a glaring design-flaw, but as I played the game more, I realized that using the buttons to fire is much more conventional than the PS3’s analog stick. In fact, if you could fire in 360-degree freedom instead of eight directions, the game would probably be too easy.

Even though the game play is phenomenal, the score for the game is something that should not be overlooked. Everyday Shooter takes a small cue from Rez and matches up the music with the explosions of the enemies that you take out. It’s not as overwhelming as you would think though, as the game’s soundtrack actually has a very soft feel to it. Each of the game’s eight stages is original, fun, and over before you know it. This is however a blessing in disguise as you realize that the game has no continues.

The game instead features an unlocking system that really boosts the re-playability of the game to epic proportions. I’ve been playing the game for over six months, just to let you know how re-playable it is. After you collect so many points, you can cash them in within the game to purchase new artistic effects, extra lives, or stages for Single Play.

This game is fantastic, and is the type of shooter that I would have expected from a development team of twenty or so people instead of one man working with C++. Jonathan Mak has created a great game that should honestly be sold at double if not triple its selling price.

Download this one now, and kiss a few hours goodbye.

Completion Time – A month of so of on and off playing (20 hours).
