Devil May Cry 4 Review (8 out of 10) ...
February 20, 2008 ... Review by Mike
Devil May Cry 4 was a roller coaster for me. At first I wasn’t a big fan ... after awhile I was having a great time ... then I got pissed at turn the game made ... and finally after it was all said and done ... Devil May Cry 4 (DMC4) turned out to be an impressive and fun game.
I won’t explain the plot of the game since Chad has already done that ... but I will say that there is an explanation to why Dante and Nero look alike ... all be it a very weak one (Something about them both being decedents of Sparda). Overall the story is interesting and compelling from the beginning to the end. The cut-scenes are bad-ass and the voice acting is so good that you will forget Capcom made this game. Nero is great character ... but Dante just “Oozes Cool” as Chad put it.
DMC 4 may not be realistic looking per say ... but it does feature some of the best graphics on the 360. The art design in DMC 4 is one of the game's best features and even surpasses the look of Eternal Sonata and Mass Effect. The world DMC 4 paints for you is immersive, beautiful, and surreal. The enemies look cool and vary somewhat ... but like most Capcom games ... this game really shines in the boss battles. The boss fights are challenging and extensive ... and they are designed extremely well. I looked forward to them as much as I do in games like Resident Evil and Mega Man.
DMC 4 does take some getting used to ... especially if you are new to the series like I was. Nero has a ton of combos and abilities at his
disposal ... and it can be a bit overwhelming at first. However ... once you figure it out ... taking enemies out with style becomes not only easy but fun as hell. The only problem is that once you easy feel at home with Nero ... the game throws a curve ball at you. I was angry about it at first ... but a couple of missions later I was loving the game more than ever.
Now the problems ... like many Capcom games before it ... there are some parts of DMC 4 where you really have to fight the camera. There were five of six frustrating parts and one extremely infuriating part where I wanted to throw the controller because of the camera. Unfortunately since this game is about fast paced action more than shooting ... the over-the-shoulder solution isn't an option. Another problem is the backtracking and the repetitiveness ... you’ll know what I mean by about the 6 hour mark. All I have to say is that if the game’s curve ball hadn’t been thrown ... this would be unacceptable; and even with it ... it’s still not great.
Overall this is a great throwback action game that utilizes 2008 technology. It’s fun ... fast ... and it’s flaws don’t prevent it from “Oozing Cool” from every pore. Check it out ... it can be beaten easily in a rental period. Scrogs.
