Bioshock Review ... (10 out of 10)

September 9, 2007 ... Review by Derek

1I picked up “The Darkness” the same day I picked up Planet Puzzle League ... but it took me awhile to get a review out there because I wanted to beat it before I reviewed it.

Right off the bat the game was a blast and it only let up a couple of times during the game. At times the enemies were repetitive ... but the game makes up for that with pure fun in game play. It is genuinely a blast to kill enemies in this game because of the two minions you command.

There are 4 different darkness powers you can get based on certain people you kill and devour the heart of (yes that is an option and encouraged). Using these powers to kill enemies is pure fun, especially the DEMON ARM which can impale almost anything ... even cars ... and throw them 100s of feet. To go along with the minions ... you can also summon Darklings ... which are little demon’s that do your bidding based on their attributes. (They are also used to solve several puzzles.)

The game is short ... 5 to 8 hours depending if you want to collect the phone numbers to unlock content ... which I think there are 100 of ... but the story is great and compelling ... and the only problem I have with this game is that there is a little backtracking ... and way too many subway visits.

Game play: Because it was made by the same people that made Chronicles of Riddick ... the game play is solid but without any precision FPS gun-play. It’s more an action game than a FPS ... because by the end of the game you hardly use your guns at all. Easy to control, targeting system is great, and this game is just a joy to play. They nailed it.

Graphics: Not the best looking game on the market ... in fact Bioshock blows it away ... but it does look damn nice. The character models are very realistic and the city is a great backdrop for the game ... so above average is what I’d use to describe it.

Sound: The score is great ... but the “intensity” music when you’re being shot at or sought out gets very repetitive. The sound effects are great and this game is awesome in surround sound. The ambient voices coming from behind you are really cool. Above average here too.

Value: I guess this is the game’s one flaw ... it’s really short and is a FPS. It only took me about 7 hours of game play to finish the game and the multi-player is a joke since in about three weeks ... no one will care about anything buy Halo 3. With that said ... I think I may play through the game again because it was such a great story with fun game play ... so I guess it has at least a little replay value.

Overall: 2K games is publishing a lot of good games this year ... and the Darkness might be the best one ... I’ll have to beat Bioshock before I can back that up. It is a definite rental and a buy for those who want to own the best 360 games ... pick it up.
