Call Of Duty 4 Review (7.5 out of 10) Singleplayer Experience Only

March 3 , 2008 ... Review by Chad

1The Xbox 360 is absolutely littered with countless first-person shooters, and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is yet another that joined the fray late last year. This is a game that sits apart from the crowd though, as it has a handful of things to offer that other shooters just don’t seem to get right.

First and foremost, in between the prologue, and the first actual mission you undergo, you’ll be sucked into the game’s atmosphere right away. The one thing about this game that shines amongst everything else is that this game will immerse you in every last little detail. All of your senses will be overloaded by this game because once the action starts, it never lets up. There are parts in the game where you feel for characters as though you actually knew them in real life. Around the middle of the game, there’s a fantastic cinematic that illustrates exactly what I mean.

The game does many things right, and that’s what bring this to be a very standout title. However, there is one thing that the game does extremely poorly, and unfortunately I have to knock the game down a few pegs because of it. The game suffers from never-ending respawns of enemies. There are parts in the game where you absolutely have to get to a certain point in the mission before enemies stop respawning out of thin air, or for them to even spawn to begin with. In what is one of the most immersive titles of last year, this is absolutely unforgivable if you ask me. Say for example that you throw a grenade into a small area where you know an enemy is supposed to pop out because he smoked you last time, and this is your second time through. The grenade goes off and you assume that the enemy is dead. You’re wrong though, because the enemy isn’t actually supposed to pop6 out of that area until you walk past a certain point. In fact, he hasn’t even been placed in that area by the game yet. That’s my major gripe with this game, and I think that if that were fixed, this game would rank a lot higher.

Another thing to take into consideration with my review is that I’m solely rating the single player experience. The game has been criticized for being short, but I would argue to the contrary. I think that the game is the perfect length for what it is. The story, the voice-overs, and the cinematography are all excellent. I like the game perfectly fine as it stands, and actually find that it has a good amount of reply value because of its length.

The final thing that I would like to mention about the game is that the missions vary in variety, and that’s something that I rarely see in FPS games, or war games in general. There is a certain mission where you take control of a gunship that’s one of my favorite moments in gaming; it’s actually that immersive.

Achievement Information – All achievements are indeed attainable. They’re also very good challenges. This is how achievements should be done.

Completion Time – Around Five hours, but you’ll want to reply certain parts of the game over. I can’t comment on the online multiplayer, but I hear it’s even more addicting than Halo.

Call of Duty 4 At A Glance

7.5
The Good
Atmosphere is one of the most immersive ever. Controls are tight. Excellent enemy A.I. Offers an experience not found in any other game, period.
The Bad
Enemy spawning could have been better. Veteran difficulty is made frustratingly tough because of it. Sometimes you have to pop a cap in ol’ Lassie L
Good
The Verdict

One of the best single player experiences on the 360 ... rent it.
